About Word Document Compression

Word documents (.docx) often contain embedded images—photos, screenshots, diagrams—that dramatically increase file size. Our compressor optimizes these images without touching your text or formatting.

How Word Compression Works

  • Image Extraction: We unpack the DOCX and compress all embedded images.
  • Image Compression: Each image is compressed using JPEG or PNG compression. Transparent images stay as PNG.
  • Repackaging: The document is reassembled with optimized images. Text, styles, and formatting are untouched.
  • Compatibility: The output opens perfectly in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, and other applications.

Best For

Reports with photos, manuals with screenshots, documents with embedded graphics, and any Word file too large for email attachments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reduce Word document file size for email?

Drop your .docx file here and we'll compress embedded images instantly. Most email providers limit attachments to 25 MB. Documents with photos or screenshots typically see 40-70% reduction. Text-only documents won't shrink much since there are no images to optimize.

Are my Word documents private and secure?

Yes. Your documents are encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256), processed exclusively on EU servers, and automatically deleted after 1 hour. We never view, share, or store your documents beyond the processing window.

Does Word compression affect my formatting?

No. We only compress embedded images. All text, fonts, styles, headers, footers, tables, comments, track changes, and document properties remain exactly as they were. Your document looks and functions identically after compression.

Can I compress .doc files (legacy Word format)?

We only support the modern .docx format (Word 2007 and later). To compress older .doc files, first open them in Word or Google Docs and save as .docx, then upload here. The conversion is quick and preserves your content.

Why is my Word document so large?

Common causes: 1) High-resolution photos pasted from camera/phone, 2) Screenshots captured at full screen resolution, 3) Copy-pasted images from the web that weren't optimized, 4) Multiple versions of the same image from editing. Our compressor addresses all of these.

Will compression remove my track changes or comments?

No. Track changes, comments, document properties, custom metadata, and all collaborative features are preserved. We only modify the binary image data within the document package—document structure and revision history remain intact.

How much can I reduce a Word document's size?

Results depend on image content: Documents with photos: 50-70% reduction. Documents with screenshots: 40-60% reduction. Documents with charts/diagrams: 20-40% reduction. Text-only documents: Minimal reduction (1-5%).

Can I compress password-protected Word documents?

Documents with open passwords (requiring a password to open) cannot be compressed. Documents with editing restrictions can usually be compressed since we only modify image content, not protected document structure.

What are the file size and batch limits?

TierMax File SizeMax Files/BatchParallel Jobs
Guest/Free25 MB50 files3 at once
Pro200 MB200 files6 at once
Business1 GB1000 files10 at once

Note: Batch and parallel processing limits apply site-wide across all compressors.

How are credits calculated for compression?

Cost: 1 credit each

How it works:

  • Files up to 25 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • 26-50 MB: 2 credits
  • 51-75 MB: 3 credits
  • 76-100 MB: 4 credits
  • Over 1000 MB: 40 credits (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB file = 1 credit. A 95 MB file = 4 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more processing resources (memory, CPU, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierCreditsReset
Guest50/dayMidnight UTC
Free50/dayMidnight UTC
Pro10,000/monthBilling cycle
Business30,000/monthBilling cycle

Note: With 1 credit per file, Guest/Free users can compress 50 files per day. Pro users can compress 10,000 files per month.
